What Could New Home Builders Be Doing Differently?

Whilst the work completed by new home builders today is exceptional and meets the needs of their clients perfectly, is there anything that they could be doing to improve the construction process or even the finished product? It is often suggested that the builders of today could try and put more of an emphasis on ‘being green’ in the homes that they construct, but how exactly would they go about achieving this?

  • Site Selection: If possible, select a location that has already been developed or choose one that has wide open spaces. This will minimise the need for tree removal and disturbing the local animal population of the area.
  • Materials: By using locally sourced materials wherever possible, you can reduce the energy, carbon footprint and cost associated with having to ship materials in. This will also help to support your local economy and keep smaller suppliers in business.
  • Energy Efficiency: When you think about how long you will be living in your home, it makes sense to make those big investments now so that you can make savings in the future. Look into energy efficient options, like solar glazing, green roofing, and solar panels.
  • Water Usage: If possible, use low usage fixtures in the bathrooms, kitchens and laundries of your home. These include low usage showerheads, dual-flush toilets, and toilets that use less water per flush than standard ones.

As the quality of construction and design produced by new home builders at the moment is already exceptional, anything else that these builders decide to do differently will only increase their success. One of the main things that builders today are encouraged to change is the ‘green’ approach that is not often enough taken in terms of construction.
