In many ways, our pets deal with change in location the same way that we do – some will find it easier to adjust than others but, eventually, all pets will have adjusted nicely to new homes in Melbourne. To encourage your dog or cat to bond with the home, you should follow these tips to ensure that they are as comfortable as possible after the move.
- Set up your pet’s belongings as soon as possible after moving in so that they can see and smell items that are familiar. Try to set them up in a similar place to the old home, such as the laundry.
- Try to feed your pet at the same time you did in the old home and make sure that you don’t change brands of food. For many animals, familiar food can be comforting and stress relieving.
- Don’t be alarmed if your pet appears anxious when you leave the new home over the first few weeks – tell them that you’re leaving and call them by name when you arrive back to help them relax.
- If you own a dog, try to take them for a walk around the neighbourhood to familiarize them with the new sights and sounds. If you own a cat, don’t be surprised if they choose to hide for a few days to acclimatize.
The most important thing that you can do when helping pets to adjust to new homes in Melbourne is to be patient with them. Whilst they might be a little bit clingy to begin with (much a small child is in an unfamiliar location), they will eventually relax and begin to move around on their own. It can also help to take a few minutes each day to play and bond with your pet.
