Common Materials Used By Modern Home Builders

When a modern home builder has recommended materials that they believe you should use in your construction, they have made this selection based on a number of factors, including price, availability and consumer demand. So, what are some of the more common of these materials that your builder may suggest you use in the construction of your home and which is best?

  • Timber: This is the most traditional material on the market and is also one of the most easily sourced. It is a popular choice amongst builders because it is durable enough to withstand most weathering conditions and, with appropriate waterproofing and insulation, it can last a homeowner for a number of years without any issues.
  • Brick and Stucco: These materials are best suited to locations that are prone to bushfires, as they are able to help prevent the home from catching fire. Many builders recommend that homeowners use traditional timber studs and that they cover the outside of the construction with either brick or stucco for protection against flame.
  • Concrete and Stone: These materials are known for being extremely durable and easy to finish. Whilst concrete is an affordable solution (the exterior walls of a home can be constructed in only a few days), natural stone is a much more attractive alternative (but is only suited to homeowners who have a large construction budget).
  • Alternatives: There are a number of other materials that can be used in construction and most of them are also eco-friendly, which helps you do your bit for the environment. These sorts of materials include recycled rubber tiles stuffed with dirt, stacked bales of straw and plastic lumbar (which resembles timber but has been made out of recycled plastics).

To learn more about any of the materials that have been outlined above, speak with your modern home builder. If yours has already provided you with a recommendation, you might like to ask them how they reached that conclusion and whether any other materials could perform equally as well. Just remember that whatever material you choose will have to last you for years.
